Viguerie: The President is a very interesting person. His style is not a style that I have generally followed. He probably has a better style; I like his style. I bring a lot of energy to things; I get in there and I stir the pot - -1 like to talk in a forceful way and get out there and really try to solve these problems. He’s (Reagan) a very...kind of laid-back almost, soft-spoken, a very gentle man. I very much admire those qualities.
He has a lot faith and trust. A lot of us will sit there and we’ll work 14, 15, 16, 18 hours a day, thinking we’ve got to really work hard to make sure it comes out the way we want. Reagan just kind of lets go; he just has faith that things will work out, and they seem to work out.
...I don’t know how Reagan’s done it, but he’s begun to set an environment up where the...he’s begun to plant the seed out there that’s beginning to call into question a lot of the things that were taken almost as gospel by a lot of people.. .the credit has to go to Ronald Reagan. The whole agenda is very different now. The liberals are all upset about Reagan’s strategic defense initiative, Star Wars. He’s changed the whole direction of conversation, whether it’s in that area or taxe^ or the role of government in
people’s lives. He’s a different type of leader than we’ve had in the past but obviously very effective.
Rapp. News: Your opinion of his presidency now seems favorable, but you often have criticized him for abandoning his conservative principles. Has he done this?
Viguerie: I am a very frank person; I am not a politician. I call it like I see it...I think Ronald Reagan has done a lot of very good things, but he has fallen short in a number of areas, and the political thing to do would be to be quiet about those things, not to say
