Rapp. News: What is the key to your success in direct mail activities, fund-raising, and grassroots political organizing?
Viguerie: I’m not sure of the answer to that. Lyndon Johnson, when he was president said he didn’t think that he was necessarily smarter than a lot of other people -? he just worked harder than anybody he knew. I probably work as hard as anybody I know. I do bring a lot of energy to whatever I do.
Rapp. News: Are you for or against arms control and arms agreements with the Soviet Union?
Viguerie: I certainly don’t have a problem with talking with the Soviets. I feel much more comfortable with Ronald Reagan in charge of the talks than I would with most of our other recent presidents. Most of them have had trusting views of the Soviets. This President (Reagan) has a very realistic view of the Soviets.
I think the media particularly and the democrats are obsessed with arms control, and I think that’s not what we should be obsessed with. We should be obsessed about the security of the United States of America.
It escapes me, I haven’t heard anybody describe how America becomes more secure, because we change the equation from having a situation where the Soviets could blow us up 20 times over down to 10 times over or even 5 times over, and that’s not how we make America secure. We make America secure by being a heck of a lot stronger...Ronald Reagan knows this and so I feel very comfortable.
