Rapp. News: What are your feelings on school prayer?

Viguerie: I believe very much that we should allow voluntary school prayer in our public schools. If the local communities want to have school prayer, then we should have that. That’s not going to solve all our problems, but it would be a step in the right direction to bring God back into our schools, back into our public life more.

Rapp. News: As lieutenant governor would you make social issues a priority?

Viguerie: There are so many things that need to be a priority. I would talk about them (social issues) and speak on them. There are many things of great importance — I certainly think that abortion is as important as anything in public life today. When you have the killing of a million and a half babies a year, there are few things more important than trying to stop that. But I’m not sure how much the lieutenant governor of Virginia can do in that area other than to help people understand the problem.

The office of lieutenant governor should be concerned with many things. We have farm problems, economic problems, school problems, crime, drugs. We have many, many problems in this Commonwealth, and I would like to have the opportunity to deal with all of these, not just a few.

Rapp. News: Many people are wary of the New Right’s determination to enact its social agenda into law. Why do you think it scares people?

Viguerie: It scares liberals. Liberals have a view (whereby) they want to force their morality on us. They don’t want people free to practice their own morality. Almost all legislation is somebody’s idea of morality.

It’s Hitler, I guess, who gets the credit for saying “You tell a big lie often enough, loud enough, and people will begin to believe it.” (Of course I’m not equating liberals with Hitler.) But they (the liberals) have told a big lie. They have told it long and often, and some people have been mislead into it. It’s the liberals who try to force their view of morality -- look at the liberal legislation out there: busing. What is busing but a liberal’s view of morality? - that somehow or other a black child cannot learn unless he’s sitting next to a white child. And their saying this is best for society. And that is the liberal? forcing their morality on us.

What are quotas, what is affirmative action? It’s liberals forcing their view of morality on us. Most of the social welfare programs - taking people’s tax dollars and spending them on this program or that program is a liberal’s version of morality.

And the liberals have said we must focus in on the criminal rather than the victim. And it is their version of morality that has nrevailed.
