Rappahannock’s Lions Club will once again sponsor the local Bland music scholarship contest on February 24 for students who are residents of Rappahannock County. Winners locally in the vocal and instrumental categories will advance to regional competition and have the opportunity to compete on the district and state levels.
The contest has been a state-wide annual event sponsored by the Lions of Virginia since 1948, and is in memory of James A. Bland. The Lions campaigned to have Bland’s “Carry Me Back To Ole Virginny” adopted as Virginia’s anthem in 1940. The Lions also erected a monument over Bland’s grave in Pennsylvania.
First place winners in the two categories will receive $75 savings bonds, second place winners will receive $50
