In reminding the supervisors that it is their job to act on the sludge matter, Eastham referred to a statement made by Virginia’s attorney general, “The local governing bodies must decide whether to stop the spreading of sludge."
Eastham explained that because of the difficulty state agencies have in dealing with the problem of human waste - alternatives are few-they allow it to be spread with guidelines and regulations. “But if the guidelines are followed, the profits of companies spreading sludge are lost,” Eastham said, his insinuation being that state agencies ease up on the enforcement of regulations to insure that spreading companies continue operating.
In closing, Eastham urged the supervisors to enforce all existing regulations and safeguards relating to the handling of sludge.
Del Price of Washington asked the supervisors if the Sperryville Sewage Plant will be large enough to handle all of Rappahannock’s sludge.
