Flying termites will begin appearing in Virginia this month. Termite swarming season usually extends from March through June, but activity is greatest in late March and April.
Homeowners may discover large numbers of the small, blackish-brown, winged termites in the basement around a window, in an upstairs room, outside the house or garage, around a porch or slab—almost anywhere. They usually appear after the weather has been warm for a few days and there has been a light rain.
The production of winged termites from a termite colony usually indicates that termites have been in the wood for two to four years. The colony has grown to a size that will allow them to give off some individuals. The swarming termites leave the colony and look for mates from other colonies in the area. The swarm rarely reinfests the same house.
Homeowners usually panic at the sight of termites. Visions of the house falling in or the floor giving out prevent rational thought. However, they should not overreact—the house or floor will not fall in.
Homeowners should get at least two bids from local pest control operators. Pest control operators belonging to either the Virginia State Pest Control Association or the National Pest Control Association are recommended. These pest control firms will have had the best training.
