The Rappahannock Board of Zoning Appeals decided to postpone ruling on a special use permit application submitted by the trustees of the Sperryville Assembly of God Church so that an on-site inspection may be made.
Michael Lamm, pastor of the ehurch, spoke to the BZA members on the application and explained what the church plans for the lot on Route 612. Lamm said that the church wants to purchase the 12.8 acres in order to build a new church building with plans for a parsonage in the future.
“The church has been in the county since 1932 and our facilities are so small that we can’t accomodate the members we have now,” Lamm said. “We also have no room on our present lot to expand.” The church is presently located on Route 1003 on the outskirts of Sperryville.
Lamm said that the lot on Route 612 was the only piece of property that could be found in the Sperryville vicinity that had enough acreage for the church’s purposes. The property can be seen from Route 211 and is located across from the Thornton River.
“The lower half of the property is in a flood plain, but then it goes up as it goes back,” Lamm said. He said that the church building will be built approximately in the middle of the lot, and the parsonage would be built in the upper part.
