a basket to put potatoes in, and there are others that are nice for putting potted plants in,” Kiley said. “Some people would say that something practical can’t be art, but I believe that something can be useful and beautiful, too.”
Little touches are added to or left on Kiley’s baskets that makes each one unique. If Kiley likes the line of a rim, she leaves that part exposed. If the grapevine tendrils are nicely curved, she does not snip them off. “I’m carrying on a tradition by using the abundance of the earth to create art,” Kiley said.
Living close to nature is important to Kiley. “The reason I live on a mountain is my love for Rappahannock and the land,” Kiley said. “I get my creative energy from the land.”
Kiley would like to reach a point when it will not be necessary for her to leave the land as much as she has to now to support herself and her son. She works part-time at a bed and breakfast, and she is teaching an oral history workshop in Clarke County.
