RHS Update
To the editor:
Last August, A group of concerned citizens met at the Washington Volunteer Fire Department to hear Mr. Walt Lane, president of the Va. Federation of Humane Societies Inc., address the welfare of animals in Rappahannock County, and the then pending legal action taken by the Federation for lack of compliance to state laws regarding animal welfare.
From that gathering of about fifty people, a planning committee was formed and the groundwork for what is now the Rappahannock Humane Society (RHS) was laid. During the next several months, a slate of directors and officers, pro tern, worked long, hard and diligently to draw up by-laws, articles of corporation, file for and recieve a certificate of incorporation from the State Corporation Commission, work toward filing with the I.R.S. for tax exempt status, recieve, forward and disperse state literature on standards for animal care.
They worked with the Board of Supervisors as an information resource and as a go-between with other county’s humane societies soliciting aid to help us with our needs, worked toward and recieved a passing inspection on the county’s gas euthinasia chamber, and much, much more.
Budget Interpreted

The following is just a note of correction. In the proposed school budget,
the teachers’ salary scale was not increased by 11 percent as reported in the Rappahannock News (3/28/85). A
7.6 percent increase was applied to the base salary and teachers who are not new to the system next year, will receive
raises ranging from 7.6 percent to 11.4 percent an average salary increase of 10 percent providing salaries
