‘Kick in teeth’
changes plans
A “kick in the teeth” prompted Lovettsville Councilmember Grace Hummer to cancel her plans for the town’s senior citizens day, she announced last Thursday.
“A number of’ senior citizens signed a petition opposing council’s proposed zoning map for the town, she said, and by signing, they “denounced” the work of the council.
That was a “kick in the teeth,” she said.
Resident Pat Peacock said later senior citizens day probably will continue despite Hummer’s action.
The petition opposed the new zoning map on the grounds that commercial zoning in the southern end of town does not conform to the “rules of good planning that provide for orderly development of a community from the center out,” could adversely affect existing houses and present a “danger” to children attending the Lovettsville Elementary School.

tables land swap
The Herndon Town Council, faced with growing opposition from citizens, tabled a proposed land swap with Fairfax County. The swap, which would turn over some land on Herndon’s eastern border to the county in exchange for some prime industrial land in the Dulles Corridor, is gaining growing opposition because of a clause in the swap agreement that specifies Herndon would give up its right to seek city status for 25 years.
