Besides learning to listen, Gottlieb hopes to learn more about himself through his work as a Hospice volunteer. “As you reach the later stages of life, one of the major efforts is to get to know who you really are,” Gottlieb said. “A lot of our behavior tends to be phony or artificial, but around someone who is dying you have the opportunity to be who you really are without games and that’s a worthy goal for anyone.”
The last months of life for a patient are emotional months for everyone involved, including the volunteers. The Hospice workers will have a support group of their own so that they can share their feelings with one another
