Artists of many kinds have traditionally sought solitude and a natural setting to work in. Cathy Kiley is no exception.
Kiley has lived in Rappahannock for 12 years, and during that time she has written plays and poems, has danced with the Last Minute Wood Company, has made wreaths and for the past year she has been making baskets.
“I got into baskets last year when Janet Kerig taught me the making process, and I love it,” Kiley said. She has since joined Kerig and and Jean Drevis to form Mountain Neighbors crafts collective, and they will have their first show at the Worthy Art Gallery in September.
“I’m excited about the show since it’s a way to display the baskets and possibly sell some of them,” Kiley said. A chance for the public to be able to see the baskets is important to Kiley since she lives near the top of Red Oak Mountain and otherwise has to market the baskets on her own.
“I’m primarily working by word of mouth although I have sold to some stores in the area and I take orders,” Kiley said. “I’m just learning about the craft business
