The Hutchesons are members of the Belgian Draft Horse Corporation of America, and they plan to breed Belgians to sell. Leon said that he has not decided whether or not to keep Shenandoah as the farm’s stud. “If he stays as easy to handle as he is now and he grows to at least 17 hands, we’ll see,” Leon said. “If you have a stallion that is 18 hands, then you’ve got money in the bank because you know you’ll be selling his foals.”
Prices for Belgians range from $2,200 to $3,000 for fillies and mares, $3,000 and up for geldings to be used in hitches, $10,000 or more for rare colors or other characteristics and $15,000 and up for mature, quality studs.
Leon said that he hopes to have six mares within a year and a half so that there will be six foals a year at the farm. Belgian mares foal after an 11 month gestation period. “They usually foal naturally and quickly,” Leon said.
He said that there is not a good market for Belgians in this area, and that he will take his horses to a sale in Columbus, Ohio when the time comes. At present, though, he and Betty are enjoying the Belgians they have, and they welcome visitors to the farm but
