Baliles, on the other hand, will depend heavily on the public’s approval of the Robb administration’s performance in which, as attorney general, he had a genuinely substantive role. Relying on this, however, can also be risky business. As innovative as some of the Robb initiatives may be to those inside government, to the person-on-the-street, they might appear, as one Robb loyalist put it, to be about as exciting as cold oatmeal.
The Democratic camp, needless to say, does not share the Republicans’ view that the Wilder candidacy is necessarily catastrophic for the entire Democratic ticket. Indeed, while many Democrats held that view earlier, most are now convinced that whatever damage is done will be done to the Wilder candidacy alone. In fact a surprising number of Democrats are coming around to the view that the Wilder candidacy itself may be “do-able.” That is, it is not inconceivable that he could win the election. Clearly, however, this is a minority view.
The Democrats have no such reservations about the electability of Terry. Many regard her as the strongest member of the Democratic ticket, and several even predict that she will gamer more votes than any of the other candidates on either ticket. While early summer polls show that she is in a virtual tie with her GOP opponent, Del. W. R. “Buster” O’Brien of Virginia Beach her supporters are con.oed
that her standings will improve markedly once the campaign gets under way.
