viour. This is the very heart of the gospel, that God justifies the unjust — and He does it not by turning His back on our sin, but rather He did it by laying the penalty of our sin entirely on the Lord Jesus Christ.
We have been studying the New Testament book of Galatians, and have recently covered the section in chapter 3 which explains how the Old Testament man, Abraham, was justified (considered by God to be righteous). It was on the basis of God’s grace, through the channel of Abraham’s faith (trust) in God. The passage goes on to explain that we of this present age who trust in Christ are counted (considered) righteous along with “faithful Abraham.” In theological jargon this is called “posi-' tional righteousness.” It is on this basis of declared righteousness that we are saved and assured of eternity with God.
There is another kind of righteousness which is called “practical righteousness.” This refers to our conduct in this life. It is God’s desire that our practical righteous conform to our positional righteousness. Tragically this is often not the case. More about this later.
