The aftermath of the school budget controversy is like the aftermath of a fire: the flames are out but the smoldering continues.
People who have lived in the county a long time say it does not take much to rekindle the controversy over schools and taxes. Really all it takes is for budget time to roll around again. And then, sure enough, the issues of education and taxes burn again.
Rather than simply wait for the controversy to return again and again, why not hold a county conference on the future of Rappahannock’s school system? Talks could center on! 1) how to fund education through fair taxation, and 2) how to provide for the educational needs of students. Discussion of the latter topic should focus on the crucial role of education today.
