and help them,” Nichols asked. Assistant Superintendent Tom Campbell said that the purpose of the evaluations of all teachers is the improvement of instruction.
“It wouldn’t make much sense to hire a teacher and then turn around and get rid of him or her,” Campbell said. “We do have high expectations and standards, but it wouldn’t serve our purposes to be condescending.” He said that any criticism is constructive with suggestions for improvement.
“I believe that teachers are evaluated everyday by their students,” Nichols said. Estabrook said that the evaluations help the administration to fulfill its obligation to the students by making sure that all of the teachers are performing at acceptable levels.
In another teacher-related matter, Estabrook gave the board members information on how much a sabbatical leave for teachers at various points on the pay index scale would cost.
The budget has $15,000 in the line item for sabbatical leaves and tuition assistance. Estabrook raised a concern that that money many not be enough to adequately fund a sabbatical for a teacher at the upper level on the index. The board tabled a decision on the sabbatical information until its next meeting when Estabrook will present his recommendation.
Other Business
In other business, Estabrook advised the board that specifications for the re-roofing work at the high school will have to be drawn up. The board also accepted a bid of $23,687 per bus for two new school buses from Salem Equipment Company of Salem, Va. The budgeted funds for the buses falls short of that bid by $940, and Estabrook said that he would try to find the $940 by moving funds from other budget line items.
