When he was bom, Leon said, Shenandoah was one of the funniest looking things he had ever seen. Belgians can weigh from 75 to 85 pounds at birth, and Leon said that the foals are all legs. “Their legs don’t get much longer as they grow, but their bodies fill out to catch up with their legs,” Leon said.
Belgians are a breed of draft horse descended from the ancient breed of Flemish horses. The first importation of the breed to the United States from Belgium was made in 1886, and Belgians quickly became popular with farmers and loggers.
Americans found that the Belgians were the easiest to handle and ship of all of the draft breeds. Their quiet dispositions earned them the title of “gentle giants,” and their ability to pull a load of 6,000 to 10,000 pounds and to work for eight to 10 hours a day has made them America’s “draft horse supreme.”
Belgians are heavily muscled with a broad, deep chest, sloping shoulders and big feet. “The only problem with them is that sometimes they step on your feet,” Leon said.
