The board’s consensus was to keep the present fees, and Estabrook said that he would work on finding the needed funds in the budget.
Gifted and Talented
Pam Rowe, special services coordinator, reported to the board that the gifted and talented screening committee at the elementary school had held a special meeting to identify specific academic ability criteria for children in kindergarten through the fourth grade.
Rowe said that the committee had determined that enough information was available to make identifications of students based on language arts and math in grades kindergarten through three. In those grades, 12 students were nominated for the gifted and talented program from kindergarten, 10 from the first grade, 9 from grade two and three from the third grade.
Nominations for the program from the fourth grade were based on information about a student’s ability in language arts, math, science and social studies. Rowe said that 12 fourth graders were nominated by the committee.
Rowe also reported on the upcoming summer computer camp to be held from July 29 to August 9 at the elementary school. The sessions will be open to all rising fifth, sixth, seventh and eighth grade students, and the deadline for registration is July 16. The sessions will be free and will include introductory and advanced wordprocessing and programming information.
Teacher Evaluation
Estabrook asked the board for its decision on the new requirements for certified personnel evaluations during the meeting. Board member Paul Nichols asked about the use of the evaluations.
