share of people who care deeply. The problem has not been in the caring, but in the doing. Too many who do care- and we include ourselves - have been too busy looking out for ourselves to speak up for what we believe. It’s time for a change!
But this is not a call to “Throw the rascals out!” The people who run Rappahannock County are not rascals. In the main, they are fine citizens who give generously of their time and effort to serve this community. They seem, indeed, to be doing a faithful job of listening to and heeding the voices they hear most often. It could, in fact, be argued that, in view of the pressures under which they operate, the Supervisors have displayed real courage in raising the property tax rate to 58 cents.
The lesson is a simple one: If public policies reflect largely the priorities of a vocal minority, surely the fault lies with a nonvocal majority, not with the elected representatives.
It’s too late to get more adequate financing for schools and other services out of the new budget. But it’s not too soon to start thinking about what we want the next budget to offer.
