Jenkins Sentenced in Circuit Court
A felony charge of grand larceny against Walter Hugh Jenkins was dismissed and ar other charge of feloniously displaying a firearm in the commission of a theft was reduced to brandishing a firearm in Rappahannock Circuit Court on Wednesday, July 3.
• i ^eWUUamShore Robertson sentenced Jenkins to six months in jail with a $50 fine in addition to court costs. The six month jail sentence was suspended, and Jenkins was placed on 12 months unsupervised proatmn. The jail suspension was conditioned on Jenkins’ good behavior or 12 months and the understanding that he is not to go on the complainant's property.
• Four Indictments Returned
Joseph Frank Bernardo was indicted on four drug-related felony charges during Rappahannock’s Term Day on Monday, July 8.
Bernardo was indicted on two charges of manufacturing marijuana not intended for his own use, one charge of conspiring to sell more than five pounds of marijuana and a charge of possession of marijuana with the intent to manufacture the same not for his own use.
• Playground Improvements
The Rappahannock County Elementary School Student Parent Teacher Association will be working on the school playground again on Saturday, July 20, and is inviting all interested parents, teachers and students to help with the project.
The playground committee is encouraged about its accomplishments during five workdays this spring. With the help of a dozen interested parents, the committee has painted several pieces of equipment, hung new swings, spread ground cover around areas that tend to stay muddy, refinished the slide, planted two trees and scraped the dome in preparation for re-painting.
There is still plenty of work to be done, and the committee is looking for new volunteers. There are trees to plant, more equipment to paint, a hopscotch court to paint and several items to build and assemble: a playground equipment storage box, seesaws and a new multi-purpose piece of play equipment.
The workday begins at 9 a.m., and volunteers are needed for any length of time they can help. Another workday is scheduled for Saturday, August 17. For more information, call Cecily Kohler at 675-3121 or Camille Harris at 675-3757.
• Employment Data
The Virginia Employment Commission in Culpeper has released its May 1985 employment data for Rappahannock and surrounding counties. Unemployment rates in Rappahannock and Culpeper increased slightly during May.
In Rappahannock, 2,558 people in the civilian labor force out of a possible 2,696 were employed. TTiat translates into an unemployment rate of 5.1 percent for the county.
Virginia as a whole also showed a slight increase in unemployment due to the number of graduates looking for work in May. For all urban consumers, the consumer price index for May increased by four percent over April’s CPI.
