Wakefield sign
returned
The Wakefield School sign, stolen three weeks ago from in front of the private school located near Huntly, has been returned, according to Headmaster William Lynn.
Lynn said he received a call Thursday from a person who discovered the sign in a ditch. At the time of the call, Lynn said the caller wished to remain anonymous. Lynn said he was not told of the exact location of the discovery.
In a letter to the editor appearing in this week’s edition, Lynn wrote he is “willing to drop the matter with no more questions asked.”
However, Lynn said the possibility still exists that Wakefield School will no longer schedule athletic events against Rappahannock County High School, as has been threatened in a report appearing last week.
Lynn said he blames the heated athletic rivalry for the theft of the sign and acts of vandalism that occurred recently on school grounds.
In his letter, Lynn wrote: “...We are absolutely convinced that the theft of our sign and the subsequent acts of thefts and vandalism were related to the heightening tensions of sports rivalry within the county.”
Lynn said a decision to schedule the public school will be made at a later date.
