Just who actually will lead the Durrette rescue charge was unclear as this was written. Clearly it could not be Godwin or Smith. Either of them would arouse memories of their segregationist past if he should get too far out front. Former Gov. John N. Dalton was mentioned as a prospect, but there are angles to the strategy which he likely would find unattractive.
We also have a desperate effort by Durrette’s camp to turn the polls around in the time remaining, with Godwin using the one weapon which might do it. That is playing on the fear, although unstated, of those who dread the thought of a black winning election to high public office, especially when the office is “a heartbeat away” from the governorship.
The tricky part will be linking all this to the Baliles candidacy in such a way that a vote for Baliles would appear to be a vote for Wilder, or at least a vote in sympathy with Wilder. Of course it would not necessarily be either, but convincing the voters that it would be is what political oratory is all about.
We wait with interest to see which strategy prevails when the voters go to the polls on Nov. 5.
