However, if only a few individual cows fit into thin or borderline categories, these cow3 may be segregated and fed additional high quality forage and/or concentrate in order to allow them to achieve moderate body condition.
Many of these cows will probably be older cows and their teeth should be examined as they go down the chute. Cows that are very old and have poor teeth may not justify the extra feed and care that is required to have them achieve moderate body condition and hence, should be culled. Besides not becoming pregnant, these old, thin cows often become the winter “downer cows” if not given special care.
