throughout the majority of the game as both teams moved up and down the field, each having numerous shots on goal. Finally, with only five minutes remaining in the game, Brian McGushin punched an excellent shot into the corner of the goal to lift Wakefield to a 2-1 victory.
In the final game of the week, Wakefield traveled to Front Royal to face a fired-up RMA team. Early in the game, David Rowzie, of Amissville, gave Wakefield a 1-0 lead on a penalty kick, but minutes later, RMA came back to tie the score at 1-1.
After a critical error by the Wakefield defense, RMA took a 2-1 lead that they carried into the halftime. Most of the second half remained scoreless until a second defensive error resulted in another RMA goal and final 3-1 decision in favor of RMA.
Wakefield’s junior varsity soccer team faced Randolph Macon in Front Royal this week. During the first half, Jerry Latell and Emeterio Gomez, both of Huntly, scored for Wakefield while RMA also was able to kick in two goals tying the score at 2-2 at the half.
As the second half began, Latell was able to score again for the Wakefield team but the stronger RMA squad retaliated with three goals that Wakefield was unable to counter. RMA won the match with a final score of 5-3.
The junior varsity team looks forward to matches next week against St. Anne’s Bellfield and Woodberry Forest.
The varsity field hockey team played the St. James School in Hagerstown this week. Although the final score was a tie at 0-0, the game was an exciting one as previously the St. James team had defeated Wakefield at every encounter.
The Wakefield Hooters were challenged by St. James’ choice of playing under intra-school rules rather than the international rules that the Wakefield team is accustomed to. The choice of which rules will be used in a particular game goes to the home team.
Despite playing under unfamiliar rules, several Wakefield players turned in strong performances. Nancy Massie, of Flint Hill, managed several fast breaks on the forward line and full backs Sharon McAllister, of Winchester, and Britney and Gaby Lee, of Flint Hill, demonstrated improved skills and staying power.
The team’s next match is scheduled against Tandem School this week.
