Lee blamed part of the marketing problem on the disappearance of small canneries.
“The big ones have control now, and they say they’ll let us know something in two weeks,” Lee said. “They’re not offering decent prices even then, though. The prices last year were a little better.”
He said the fresh market was fair for the Lee Orchards this year, but that will not make up for the poor juice market. “The juice apple market will make a year, and when that lower end is not up, we hurt,” Lee said.
Herbert Foster, operator of orchards in Flint Hill and on Route 631, said the low juice market price could be due to a glut on the market. “They had hail in the Winchester area that damaged a lot of their apples so they had to be sent to processors,” Foster said.
He said his orchards had 80-86 percent of a full crop. "That’s lots better than last year,” Foster said.
