Retired teachers to meet

The Rappahannock Retired Teachers’ Association will meet on Oct. 29 at 10:30 a.m. in Washington Baptist Church. Any retired teachers living in the county who have not joined the association are encouraged to attend.

Grief seminar

A seminar designed for those who have recently experienced the death of a family member or friend entitled, “Good Grief: Coping Creatively with Loss,” will be presented at The Conyers House on Oct. 25 from 10 a.m. until noon. The leader will be Chaplain Lynwood Swanson. To secure registration, call 987-8025.

Leasing workshop

A leasing workshop will be held at the Rappahannock Courthouse in Washington at 7:30 p.m. beginning Nov. 13. For more information and to pre-register, call the Extension office at 675-3619.

Banjo performance

Cathy Fink, three-time West Virginia state banjo champion, will perform old American music on Nov. 8 at 7:30 p.m. in the Gay St. Theatre. She also plays the fiddle, guitar, dulcimer and button accordian. A regular performer at the Smithsonian Institution’s Hall of Musical Instruments and with the group Magpie, she has made four records.

The cost of admission will be $6 for adults, $5 for RAAC members and $4 for students.

Historical Society meeting

The third quarterly meeting of the Rappahannock Historical Society will be held in the Historical Society building on Gay Street in Washington on Nov. 1 at 7:30 p.m.

Anniversary banquet

Mary Magdalene Chapter #208 of the Eastern Star in Front Royal will celebrate its 34th anniversary on Nov. 16 at 6 p.m. at the Quality Inn in Front Royal. Margaret Coleman, of Arlington, will be guest speaker and donations are $14. Ladies auxiliary plans Halloween party

The Amissville Ladies Auxiliary will hold their annual Halloween Party on Oct. 31, beginning at 7:30-9:30 at the fire hall. Admission is $1 per person. Bigger and better than last year. Games and prizes, trick or treat bags and refreshments.

Come have a ghostly night.

Jessie Waites fund benefit

There will be a benefit dinner on Friday, October 25, at the Castleton Volunteer. Fire Department. Proceeds will go to the Jessie Waites fund to .help a seven year old little girl fight leukemia.

The menu Will feature lasagne, meatless and with meat, garlic French bread, tossed salad, iced tea, coffee and fresh cider. Desserts, wine and beer will be sold separately. Dinner music, will be provided by Terry Waggener and Vincent Day.

Tickets, at $6 for adults and $3 for children, are available in advance from the Rappahannock News, Brambles Cafe, Washington Video, Middle St. Gallery, and organizers of the event. Tickets at the door will be $7 for adults, $4 for children.

Family portraits

Come have your family portrait taken at the Amissville Fire Hall on Oct. 27 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sponsored by the Amissville Ladies Auxiliary.

Pastor’s Aid

Reverend Ulysses Martin, his choir and congregation from Culpeper will be guests at Hopewell Baptist Church in Sperryville for the Pastor’s Aid Anniversary on Nov. 10 at 3 p.m. The program is sponsored by Rachel Aylor, president.

4-H’ers’ hike

All trekkers are invited to join Rappahannock, Madison and Orange County 4-H’ers in a hike at White Oak Canyon on Oct. 26. Hikers will meet at the Extension office in Washington and leave by 8:30 a.m. They will return by 4 p.m. Drivers and hikers may make reservations at the Extension office by calling 675-3619. Bring a brown bag lunch and drink.
