Rappahannock students who took the exam was 432, just three points below the state score (435) and one point better than the national (431) score.

Local students, however, were siginificantly behind averages in the math portion of the test. The 429 local score on the math portion of the exam trailed state (473) and national (475) averages.

Nationally, test scores rose for the fourth straight year after two decades of steady decline, and the results this year are the greatest of any single class in the last 22 years.

Still, the combined score nationally this year was 74 points below’ the all-time high recorded in 1963 when the average math score was 502 and the average verbal score 478.
