Walker suggested rumors began recently when the news of seasonal slowdowns — particularly at the Edinburg dyeing and finishing plant which traditionally lays off workers earlier than cutting and sewing factories — began to spread to other plants.
Walker, however, painted an optimistic picture, quite different from the rumored dark days ahead.
Aileen Inc. began a marketing approach about two years ago to compete with Asian exporters, who are making clothes of similar quality at a much lower cost, Walker said.
