convinced that the theft of our school sign and the subsequent acts of theft and vandalism were related to the heightening tensions of sports rivalry within the county. It is also clear that these senseless acts of grand larceny, possibly meant as only pranks, were committed by a very few who, in no way, are representative of the school or the community.
The Wakefield sign has now been recovered, and we are willing to drop the matter with no more questions asked. For the sake of our community, young people need to mind what they do, school officials need to mind what they say (especially to reporters) and newspapermen need to mind what they write. On the playing fields the soccer teams of Rappahannock High and Wakefield have given us a perfect example of sportsmanship. Let’s all follow that example. Together, let us build a new relationship based on respect, trust and fair play.
