The newly-formed Wakefield cross country team won first place in the 1986 Delaney Conference Men’s Division last weekend. The meet was held at the Sterling Campus of Northern Virginia Community College.
Stephen Butler, a junior from Marshall, earned the first place trophy for Wakefield. Classmate Brad Pendergraph, of Haymarket, came in second place and another junior, Jason Walker, also of Haymarket, place sixth overall in the competition.
Coach Gary Leake expressed great satisfaction with the trophy earned by Butler. He added that the team did the minority of the work on their own, which shows a great deal of initiative.
Sports update
As Wakefield’s varsity soccer team begins the second half of the 1986 schedule, the team has completed the busiest week of the season. Although the team collected two additional conference victories and a third interconference win, they were disappointed after being handed their second defeat of the season at the hands of rival Randolph Macon Academy, of Front Royal.
During the week, Wakefield played Emmanuel Christian School twice, collecting victories in each encounter to raise Wakefield’s Delaney Athletic Conference record to 5-0. In the first meeting, solid play from the whole team surged Wakefield to a commanding 6-0 lead at halftime. However, because of severe rain, the match was halted only minutes into the second half with Wakefield winning, 6-0.
In Hie second meeting with Emmanuel, Wakefield started sluggishly as several starters were missing from the line-up. Wakefield managed, however, to climb to a 4*-l lead at halftime. In the second half, Emmanuel began a comeback as they pulled the score to 5-3 midway through the period. Sparked by the third and fourth goals of the game by Larry Tarr, of Warrenton, Wakefield held on to capture the 8-3 decision.
In the third game of the week, Wakefield traveled to Madison County High School where the team played the most exciting game of the season. Madison opened the scoring early in the game off a perfect crossing pass from their left wing. However, minutes later, Wakefield retaliated as Ed McGushin, of Haymarket, scored to knot the game at 1-1. -
