considerably different. Because he is believed to be running behind in the polls, a major rescue operation is getting under way in an attempt to retrieve lost ground. It is being spearheaded, not by the shaken state Republican Party, but by the “Virginians for Durrette”organization.
That group is made up mainly of the so-called old guard of former Byrd organization loyalists along with the state’s independent conservatives. It is led by former Gov. Mills E. Godwin Jr. and former Del. Roy Smith of Petersburg.
Godwin is an old warhorse who knows Virginia politics and is convinced that he knows exactly what it will take to get the attention of Virginia’s voters and attract them to his man. Indeed, he has outlined in advance the strategy of his rescue attempt.
Godwin does not plan to focus his attack on Baliles, but rather on Baliles’ running mate for lieutenant governor, state Sen. L. Douglas Wilder of Richmond. The attack will be upon what Godwin calls Wilder’s “liberal record” during his 15 years in the Senate.
Wilder, of course, is black, and while Godwin heatedly denies that race has any part in his choice of Wilder as his target on the Democratic ticket, he probably has most of the good ol’ boy voters chuckling quietly to themselves. Yessir, they agree,
