As a whole, Walker estimates factory stores — outlets where clothing can be sold at lower prices because of savings realized from decreased shipping and handling costs, as well as reducing the number of middlemen/salesmen and eliminating markups by retail dealers — have recovered about 20 percent of that one-third business lost to imports.

For instance, Walker said the outlet store in Dale City near Woodbridge has “done $20,000 weeks,” a pace that would gross the store $1 million annually if it could sustain that pace.

“You wouldn’t need too many of those to keep you in business,” Walker said.
