But that is still not the busiest three-day period in the park, according to officials there. Columbus Day weekend this year — the weekend preceding the celebration — attracted 72,399 visitors counting Saturday, Sunday and Monday admissions.
In Sperryville on Sunday, the rains kept crowds at about 60 percent of Saturday’s turnout, but the traffic was busy enough to make the day a long one.
“My staff thought they could go home” when it rained Sunday, Woodard said. “But they worked the whole day.”
“We had all the people we could handle on Sunday,” added 0‘Bannon of the Emporium.
Church groups made money selling food, the Lions Club reportedly doubled what they had hoped to earn over the weekend, offering apple butter.
The “Artists of the Blue Ridge — A Regional Art Show” attracted thousands of people to view the work of 30 or so of the area’s artisans which was on display at Faith Mountain.
Festival Coordinator Martin Woodard called the weekend a “tremendous success.”
