college-bound students who take the exam.
Lately, however, the SAT has been one indicator of the educational ability of a school system. In 1900, when the scores bottomed-out, educators and politicians demanded reforms.
Last year, President Reagan set a goal of topping the 1963 SAT watermark by 1990.
Locally, school officials also calculated the averages of those students who took the test who also entered four-year colleges. As expected, those averages were considerably higher and, in both cases, topped state and national averages.
The 20 Rappahannock County High School students who went on to a four-year college compiled an average math score of 467, just slightly lower than averaged in Virginia and across the country.
The verbal score, on the other hand, was 455, some 20 points higher than the state or national averages:
The combined score of 923 posted by college-bound students was roughly 20 higher than state and national averages.
Nearly 36,000 Virginia pupils took the exam. Male seniors had higher scores than females on both the math and verbal portions.
Last year, the Virginia combined score was 894, five points lower than the national average.
