The latest reductions came in proposed salaries for custodians, bus drivers, aides, garage employees, administrative secretaries and clerical staffers, as projected pay raises were lowered 3 percent.

That means, on the average, non-professional employees would receive increases of 7 percent next year if the School Board proposal is adopted by the Board of Supervisors.

The School Board also eliminated $13,360 projected for furniture for the high school addition and $10,000 from fuel, made possible by the decision to replace the stoker on the high school furnace rather than convert the heating system from coal to oil.

In addition, the board knocked off $9,448 by going with one new bus and a 15-passenger van as replacement vehicles instead of the two buses asked for by the superintendent.

With the proposed 10 percent increase in starting salary, plus the $300 bonus for signing a Rappahannock contract, a starting teacher next year will earn $15,212. The figure is more than a second-year teacher currently
