“We had 20 teachers leave last year and we had to get 10 new ones (first-year teachers to fill the vacancies). I’m concerned that this spring, when it’s time to renew contracts, they’ll be making only $147 more than the new beginning teachers. ”
Reeve acknowledged that the county needs to be more competitive in its starting salary but maintained that the first year of work is a teacher’s “least valuable” and “least productive” time.
“That’s true of most fields,” she added. “In order for bonuses to be effective, the entire salary scale has got to be more competitive to begin with,” Reeve argued, asking the board to reconsider its endorsement of the bonus plan.
“The problem with the index (pay scale) is the starting salary, the base,” said Randall Updike, the originator of the bonus concept. “Each year the county falls further behind. I don’t know how we correct that.”
