“Keep it straight! To the left! Go an inch higher! I can’t get this level. I got it!”

Last week Rappahannock County High School Junior-Senior Trigonometry students were busily building a kinship with George Washington as they learned surveying techniques from teacher Donald Bomberger.

Mr. Bomberger explained, “During the last month we have been working on solving triangles. That means given some information about a triangle they were able to find everything else about that triangle. For example, given an angle and two sides they could then find the other two angles and the other side. They were doing this on paper using various trigonometrical formulas.”

“We’re trying to make the mathematics more interesting by letting them take some actual measurements using transit and rule,” Mr. Bomberger continued. “They can take distance and angle measurement. Then use those measurements to find distances that they can’t find out by actually measuring. They would have to make those calculations in the same way they make calculations in class.”

The class Was divided into three groups. Each group worked with a transit and they had a particular problem to solve.

Jennifer Shorb explained her group’s task. “We measured the difference of the angle of elevation from three points.”

Jonathan Watson stated that one difficulty they had was getting the transit perfectly level in order to make accurate measurements.

Tammy Butler and Lee Baines described group two’s problem. “We had to measure two sides and by using calculations we could get the measurement of the third side and also the angle between the two sides.”

Tammy and Lee thought actually measuring distances themselves was more interesting than doing examples from books.
