This model program began in May, 1985, on a trial basis on the medical/surgical unit through a > cooperative effort by Culpeper Memorial Hospital and the Rappahannock-Rapidan Community Services Center. With approval of a Certificate of Need and licensure by the Commonwealth of Virginia Department of Mental Health and Mental Retardation, the unit has expanded to a separate service providing acute care for psychiatric patients.
This beautiful, spacious unit is secluded from the rest of the hospital and has a separate entrance for the privacy of our patients and their families. The recently completed unit includes patient rooms, group therapy area, meeting room, offices, and a kitchen and laundry room for the use of the patients.
In this home-like environment, patients continue many of their normal activities while learning behavior . to transfer to their outside daily lives.
With an average length of stay of two weeks, patients receive treatment tailored to their individual needs with emphasis on group participation.
The team of skilled professionals Includes psychiatrists, consulting psychologists, nurses, social workers, and activity therapists. These counselors look at each patient's family dynamics and work situation as they treat the total needs of the patient.
Even though the Behavioral Medicine Unit Is Isolated, it is still close to a full range of medical services In the hospital, an Important factor since physical conditions are sometimes involved with behavior problems.
The entire five-county area benefits from having the Behavioral Medicine Unit at CMH. Since the hospital Is close to patients’ homes, patients are able to maintain close contact with their families and friends who travel short distances to visit.
