The Piedmont Environmental Council, a Warrenton-based preservation group that has helped lead the fight against “hoodlum hunters," said it will support the NR A proposal as an alternative to a cased gun law, according to Charles S. Whitehouse, chairman of the PEC board of directors.
Mr. Whitehouse also urged the commission to adopt tougher regulations to prevent armed trespassing ' on private property and to prevent hunting from state roads.
Other public proposals included suggestions that the commission shorten the deer season east of the Blue Ridge, prohibit use of dogs to hunt deer, increase the number of wardens during deer season and work more closely with local law enforcement agencies.
“Do whatever you can to make the warden’s job less futile,” Mr. Lane said.
But the commission refused to take sole responsibility for solving the problem, which commissioners said that local officials such as Mr. Lane share.
“We can’t do anything about loaded firearms in motor vehicles in Rappahannock County, because you haven’t given us the teeth to,” said Commissioner Henry A. Thomas, who represents Prince William , Alexandria and part of Fairfax.
Mr. Thomas added that local boards also have the power to control use of dogs in their jurisdictions
