the Greek-style Roman temple which was Thomas Jefferson’s model for the Virginia state Capitol in Richmond. Sightseeing in Orange will include a tour of more antiques, including the best preserved Roman theatre in the world.
Before returning home by way of Paris, the group will spend time in the old university city of Montpelier.
In commenting on the trip, Wakefield headmaster William Lynn explained that Southern France was selected for the student tour this year because most of the seniors have spent years at Wakefield studying both French and Latin.
This trip, he said, would give the students an opportunity to practice their French and then explore some remarkably well-preserved remnants of Latin culture. Mr. Lynn explained further that the senior history course at Wakefield includes extensive readings from Gibbon’s Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire.
The chance for students to examine first hand the ruins of that great civilization should, Mr, Lynn says, leave an indelible impression. He feels that this study-tour will provide the finishing touch for the classical education which Wakefield seeks to impart.
