The Consumer Guide gives Diet Watchers four-star rating as being a life style diet. A life style diet is one that a dieter can stay on for months or years, if not for life. Therefore, it must be safe, effective, nutritionally well-balanced and offer many food choices.
A program receiving four-star rating must provide a balanced diet that provides an adequate amount of protein; no more than 30 percent of calories from fat, a prominent proportion of carbohydrates and very little sugar. A four-star diet is one you can live on healthily for the rest of your life without vitamin-mineral supplementation.
The Diet Watchers program was started in 1961 by Ann Gold, and later sold to Conway Diet Institute. In 1982 the company was purchased by Champion Management System, of Charlotte, N. C. Currently the company conducts classes in 22 states.
The Diet Watchers Diet is derived from the New York City diet. But the new version provides 1,000 to 1,350 daily calories for women and 1,200 to 1,500 for men.
The Guide rates the nutritional specifications of the diet as excellent: 78 grams of protein, 21 percent of fat, and lots of carbohydrates (43 percent of calories), mostly of the complex kind.
The diet features lots of fruits and vegetables, fish, poultry and veal. Beef and lamb are allowed for 3 dinners a week.
Diet Watchers says their program works because they instruct their clients in good nutrition and behavior modification (change bad eating habits to good eating habits), provide new beginning exercise, build self-esteem and provide instruction in food preparation. The knowledge one learns from the program can help you lead your family to a better nutritional healthy lifestyle.
