In an abbreviated work session lasting only a few minutes after Monday’s public hearing on the proposed 1986-87 school budget, accountant Wally Cox informed the supervisors that the county’s general fund surplus will be unusually high at the end of the current fiscal year.
He estimated that the balance would be around $400,000, well above the generally accepted reserve of 5 percent of the total. In Rappahannock’s case, that works out to about $200,000.
According to Mr. Cox, the excess equals the imbalance in proposed expenditures for next year. As submitted, requests from the School Board and other departments outstrip revenue projections by $200,000 under the present tax rate of 58 cents per $100 of asessed value, according to Mr, Cox.
