As the plot unfolds, Charlie “overhears” a conversation between the Reverend David Lee, played by Jason Walker of Haymarket, and Owen Musser, the local country inspector, played by Sean Dolan of Warrenton. Lee and Musser have devised a sinister plot to have Betty’s lodge condemmed so that Lee can buy it for a pittance.
Meanwhile, the simple-minded Ellard, played by Sean Hunter of Amissville, began to teach Charlie the basics of English vocabulary replete with southern drawl. Charlie and Ellard, who is not so dim-witted after all, foil the plans of the evil Lee and Musser who are joined by other members of the Ku Klux Klan.
In the end, Lee is run out of town; Charlie, who has received word from home that his wife has left him, finds happiness and ro• mance with* Lee’s wife, and Bettyfs lodge is saved.
Several other students deserve to be commended for their performances. Dolan portrayed Inspector Musser as a convincing “good old boy” and Lara Dose of Toms Brook, although on stage only for brief periods, projected herself extremely well.
Taken in part or as a whole, The Foreign Company was an excellent presentation.
