Or. William Russell wrapped up three year-end titles at the Rappahannock Hunt's races Sunday near Sperrvville.
Careening down off Thornton Hill Farm's infamous mountainside, the 31-year-old radiologist from Elizabeth City, N. C., went to the lead in the Seven Corners ownerrider timber race to secure that title, plus Rider of the Year and more than likely the Horse of the Year tag for his remarkable mount, Marat.
It was an impressive finish to an excellent season in which Dr. Russell rode six winners and two second-placed finishers and Marat won five races and finished second in one other.
"Put that down to something that I had nothing to do with,” Dr. Russell said modestly after the race.
For his part in the victories, Dr. Russell’s trainer Don Yovanovich of Upperville earned himself the new Trainer of the Year title.
Marat faced a field of three others in Rappahannock’s owner-rider timber race. But perhaps the biggest challenge facing the 9-year-old Chilean-bred and his rider was the hilly Rappahannock course which threatened to part horse and rider at several occasions, and forced Dr. Russell to ride a careful and calibrated race.
“It’s a tough old course, it chops and changes so much,” said Dr. Russell. “Coming down that hill, anything could happen. You have to set up for that fence several hundred yards ahead of it.”
