Charlie Baker meanwhile has accompanied Froggy on his trip to America as a respite from his problems at home. Landis, as Charlie, also a veteran of several Wakefield productions, came across as the worn-down and worn-out cuckolded husband who was also infinitely boring. At one point, Charlie, a proofreader for a science fiction magazine, wonders how one goes about acquiring a personality. Because Froggy tells the other characters that Charlie is a foreigner who does not speak or understand English, Charlie is privy to all manner of private conversations.
With two such strong male leads it would be difficult to imagine another character coming across with equal force, but Tracy Moran of Haymarket as Betty Meeks did exactly that. Betty kept the audience laughing; this bespectacled, greyhaired rube thought that if she shrieked loudly enough, Charlie would better understand her English.
