Rappahannock was leading 9-8 in the bottom of the seventh before *■« Clarke County outfielder Rush came to the plate. Rush, two for three at that point, was in a tough situation. His team trailed 9-8. Runners werp on first and second, and Rappahannock’s ace hurler Tommy Jenkins. had Rush on the ropes with an 0-2;* count. Rush fought back, punching a chest-high fastball on the outside • comer deep into right-center field for a £ame:winning triple.
The Panthers jumped to a 5-0 lead in the top of the first. The lead was short-lived, however, as Panther freshman pitcher Doug Smith had trouble getting settled on the mound.
