‘Think tank9 gets look
CHARLOTTESVILLE — A research center in Charlottesville, although little known in Virginia, is gaining national attention for its study of the U.S. presidency.
The White Burkett Miller Center of Public Affairs has attracted presidents, Cabinet members, ambassadors and presidential advisors since it opened its doors 10 years ago. v “It’s becoming one of the leading centers in the country,” former Secretary of State Dean Rusk, said in a telephone interview. Now a law professor at the University of Virginia, Rusk has also contributed his insights about the presidency at Miller Center forums.
Wilder offers advice
HAMPTON — Adults owe it to young people to tell them that life is hard, says Lt. Gov. L. Douglas Wilder.
“They are not going to be excused for not measuring up,” Lt. Gov. Wilder said at a dinner last Thursday night sponsored by Citizens Boys’ Club of Hampton.
Mr. Wilder, the first black to hold state office in Virginia, spoke of his college days and how he had to borrow money to pay for his education at Virginia Union University. But he always got what he needed because his backers believed the money was well spent.
“That’s what investment is all about, and that’s what our young people need,” he said.
