Truck ban

(Continued from Page 1) that this stretch of Rt. 522 is far longer than the unimproved portions of Rt. 17. In addition, he said, Rt. 522 has shorter sight distance, more curves and a narrower road bed (10 feet compared to Rt. lTs pavement width of at least 12 feet).

“I don’t think congestion should be brought in at this late date,” agreed chairman Hubert Gilkey. “We’ve paid our dues,” said theWakefield representative, whose district bears the brunt of the increased truck traffic.

In a strongly worded letter to Ms. Kincheloe authorized at its November meeting, the board maintained that any continuation of the tractor-trailer ban contingent upon construction of the spur “amounts to an excess of zeal in protecting the citizens in the Rt. 17 corridor while betraying an unfair disregard for the safety and peace of mind of the residents of the village of Flint Hill and of others who make their homes along Rt. 522... No such ban is justified upon completion of the parallel lanes from the town of Warrenton to Rt. 645.”

The board also urged Rappahannock residents to send letters carrying that same message to Ms. Constance R. Kincheloe, Virginia Department of Transportation, 1211 East Broad St., Richmond 23219.
