Ms. Gorman repeated that local mental health and mental retard aion agencies have to provide mandated programs and services for the 9,000 chronically ill men and women who have been released from state institutions, but that funds have not been forthcoming to pay for the necessary program and service expansion.
“How can they do that?” Mr. Lane wanted to know.
“That’s the question that I’ve been asking for years, and that’s why I’m questioning whether I should even remain in this profession,” Ms. Gorman replied. “When the sheriffs department calls at 3 a.m. for us to do a pre-screening for sending someone to Western State, we have to pay the staff to do that.”
But the service needs in that area are insignificant compared to the dearth in programs available for ythe mentally ill and mentally retarded upon their release from that • same -institution, she added. “We’re not even coming close to meeting those needs ... So we want to make sure the Governor submits a budget to the General Assembly that will restore our basic maintenance funds
